Meet Begonia Fernandez de la Vega of Maison D’Alexandre! | Greenwich Moms

Begonia Fernandez de la Vega moved to Greenwich in 2020 to join the amazing team at Maison D’Alexandre. This experienced colorist was born in Brussels into a family of hairdressers. “I have an international resume, having worked in Brussels, Madrid, Paris, Istanbul, Los Angeles, Texas and now in Greenwich. Alexandre and I have known each other for over 20 years having worked together at Jacques Dessange in Paris,” explains Begonia. This is a bit of a different “Meet a Mom” interview with a fur-baby twist—Begonia is mom to an adorable Pomeranian pup, Wifi! Here’s a bit more about Begonia, including her best advice for fixing a quarantine at-home dye disaster, color trends for 2021 and more!

Can you please tell us a bit more about yourself?
I moved to Greenwich with my fiancée Kevin who works in sports marketing and my Pomeranian, Wifi. We live in an apartment on Elm Street in the heart of downtown Greenwich—where the action, movement, life and fashion are. My four-legged child, Wifi, loves his new neighbors in Greenwich. He has become something of a local mascot as everyone wants to know how he is adapting to his new town!

Adorable and love his name! How long have you been a colorist?
I am a third generation hair stylist and started coloring my mom’s hair at 14 years old. Since that time I knew my life would be in hair. My color career began at the top salons in Europe including Lucie St Clair and Jacques Dessange. At Dessange I was the lead educator responsible for opening and training  color teams as the franchise expanded internationally. From Europe, I moved to Los Angeles and then Texas. Finally in December 2020, my longtime friend Alexandre convinced me to join his team at Maison D’Alexandre.  I jumped at the opportunity to work together with Alexandre who shares my passion for service and dedication to the craft of hairdressing.

What do you love most about working there, and about your field in general?
Alexandre has created another world of beauty with a level of service beyond anything that I have experienced. This is the luxury hair service from the first step when you enter the salon until the last step out the door, the guests have a Wow experience. I like how Alexandre puts his heart and life into this salon; every detail has his signature touch.  Alexandre takes care of everyone and ensures that every client feels important and deserves personal attention. Here hairstyle is like “couture”  made to measure.

Hair Color is my passion—being able to customize each and every client for me is a satisfaction. I can never squeeze just one tube of color and that’s it. The color is an infinite possibility. I create customized color for each client based on their skin tone, eye color, and quality of hair and lifestyle.

Quarantine-related question here…What advice would you give someone who tried to dye their hair at home and it was a disaster?
First, if you have a bad color, it is okay!  We have solutions. Second, don’t try to fix your color yourself because you can end up with very damaged hair. Go see a professional; we know how to fix booboos. We will direct you and advise you and even fix the problem. That is what we do!

What are your favorite color trends at the moment and why?
Women go through ages just like their hairstyle and color.   However, I do have some favorite looks: Icy Brunette tones which are less brassy and more natural. Or Smoky Hair (think of the smoky eye), Cool Highlights and bright tips. I  like to do  Hair Contouring, lighter around the face, painting on wet hair to soften and break up a harsh hairline or regrowth. The result is a customized hair dimension to bring all the attention to the “CHEVELURE”. This accentuates your eye color and warms up your complexion.  Due to our COVID Masking and less makeup, we need to be more focused on the shine of the hair!

If someone wants hair color that will grow out slowly, what should they tell their stylist?
Hair color that grows out well gently fades out within 4-8 weeks. It can also blend the grays. It is safe and gentle. There are a lot of names for this type of service—gloss, semi-color, temporary color. It is something that contains no ammonia and deposits pigment. It can be with a tone like gold, copper, ash or something close to the natural color. A successful color is when you believe it is natural, caressed by the sun.

What precautions are you taking during COVID?
The salon takes every precaution to guard the safety of our team and clients.  We are operating at 50% occupancy to maintain 6 feet between clients.  All team members and clients have temperature checks upon entry to the salon and are required to wear masks at all times. Plexiglass dividers have been installed between the shampoo chairs as a safeguard. We make ourselves available to accommodate guests for outdoor services when possible or early morning visits where the salon has fewer occupants.

Why is self-care so important?
Self-care is important because beauty is the well-being and feel for the morale.  Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good!
