Can you please tell us a bit about yourself personally?
I’m a mom of three kids – Juliana (15), William (13), and Jasmine (11). Let’s not forget my dog, Tater, who absolutely acts like my fourth child! They keep me busy and inspire me every day! My husband is a great partner and fully supports me either at work or at home.
And yes, all three children play the piano!
What do you love about Greenwich?
We moved out of Greenwich about eight years ago. I’m now back in Los Angeles, where I grew up. When we were in Greenwich, we enjoyed the sense of community and how everyone supports each other. It’s such a beautiful place to raise a family, with great schools and parks for the kids.
How did you go from giving piano lessons at the age of 15 to opening your own piano studio?
I remember telling my piano teacher at that time that I would love to start teaching, and he announced to his studio that I was to become his teaching assistant. While I didn’t assist in his teaching, having that acknowledgement launched my teaching career at the age of 15. I was working with five to ten students throughout high school, and it quickly became a true passion. While many people attend music conservatories to become performers, I chose the Manhattan School of Music to become the best pianist I could be, so I could pass on my knowledge. After studying music professionally, I knew I wanted to create a space where students could experience the joy of learning in a supportive environment. That’s how Natalia Huang Piano Studio came to life!
What is unique about Natalia Huang Piano Studio?
Our focus goes beyond just piano lessons—we’re dedicated to building confidence and essential life skills. In our supportive community, students thrive as we work closely with them to reach their individual goals, whether that’s excelling in exams, competitions, or personal growth. With six studio locations across both coasts, we stand apart from other music schools by specializing in piano and taking pride in offering the highest quality lessons.
What are some of the benefits of teaching piano to young children?
Learning piano enhances focus, discipline, and creativity, while also boosting problem-solving skills, patience, and even math abilities. Although some of these benefits may not be immediately obvious, we believe students will reap the rewards in the long run.
What is the best advice for starting piano lessons with your child?
Take it slow and stay actively involved as parents! Choose a studio that fosters a positive learning experience, and don’t focus on perfection— make sure to enjoy the journey. It’s also crucial to understand why you want your child to take piano lessons. Having that “why” will guide you in supporting your child through challenging moments in their learning and help them succeed with playing the piano!
What do you find the most challenging and most rewarding parts of being a piano teacher and a studio owner?
The hardest part is trying to balance it all—running the studio and being a mom. There are days when it feels like I’m stretched too thin, and the guilt of not giving enough to either can be overwhelming. But over time, I’ve learned that it’s okay to take a step back and breathe. Giving myself that grace allows me to be more present for both my family and the studio.
What truly touches my heart is the community we’ve built. Our students, parents, and teachers share a deep appreciation for music education, and we’ve been fortunate to connect with so many amazing people. One of the greatest joys for me is watching a child grow from their first lesson as a little one to becoming a young adult. Witnessing their journey and growth is such a profound honor, and it reminds me every day why I love what I do.
How do you balance being a teacher, entrepreneur and being a parent?
Balance? What balance? It’s really just a lot of juggling! I try to prioritize and plan as best as I can, but I also remind myself that it’s okay if things don’t go perfectly. Having an amazing team at the studio and a wonderful husband definitely helps! Years ago, someone told me, “If you don’t answer an email or phone call right away, it’s okay—no one’s life is hanging in the balance over piano lessons!” That piece of advice stuck with me and has definitely helped lighten the load.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from another parent?
It may sound cliché, but the best advice is to be present and treasure the little moments. Time goes by so quickly, and it’s important to slow down and savor those special times with your kids. Don’t hesitate to give that extra hug, read one more story, or play one more game—it’s always worth it!
What do you like to do to relax/have fun for yourself and as a family?
We love spending time together on family hikes and enjoying movie nights. Good food is another thing we all share a passion for, so we’re always exploring new restaurants. My kids can surprisingly handle spicy food, so we’re constantly on the hunt for the best Szechuan spot! As for me, I love to read and fit in a workout whenever I can, and of course, playing the piano!
What is your mom uniform?
Big fan of t-shirts and joggers!
Anything else you’d like to share?
One thing I’d love to share is how I wish music education was seen as an essential part of a child’s development, rather than just a hobby. Often, parents approach lessons saying things like, “I’m not sure how much talent my child has” or “We’re not trying to raise a concert pianist,” but it’s not about that. Music is such a big part of our lives—from singing happy birthday to the music in a movie or even the halftime show at a football game. Learning to play a musical instrument should be viewed as a necessary part of a child’s education because, even if they don’t become a professional musician, having a foundation in music will ultimately lead to a more enriching and fulfilling life.
