Meet a Mom: Dr. Julie Sweeney of SproutWell Pediatric Integrative Medicine

Local mom of three and pediatrician, Dr. Julie Sweeney, is helping families across Fairfield and Westchester Counties find a more balanced approach to children’s health. Through her Darien-based practice, SproutWell Pediatric Integrative Medicine, she combines science, heart, and holistic therapies to help kids thrive from the inside out.

How old are your kids and how long have you lived in the area?
I have three boys, Ryan (16), Liam (14) and Finn (11).
I grew up right here in Fairfield County, so this area has always been home to me. The year before I went to medical school, I actually taught 7th and 8th grade science at Greens Farms Academy! My husband and I have lived here for 18 years.

What’s your favorite aspect about being part of the community?
I love walking into a local store and running into a friend I haven’t seen in months or someone I’ve known since elementary school. Some of my favorite moments in my practice are when childhood friends or friends of my siblings come in with their babies. I feel so lucky and honored to care for them and their families now.

Can you tell us a bit about your path to health and wellness? What is your professional background?
I always wanted to be a doctor. In high school, I became an EMT and ambulance driver at just 16 years old. That early, hands-on experience taught me how deeply meaningful it is to care for people in moments of need.

After earning my medical degree and completing my pediatric residency at New York Medical College, I spent more than a decade working as a general pediatrician in Stamford. During that time, I noticed how often families were searching for answers beyond what conventional medicine alone could provide.

I discovered integrative medicine while seeking help with my own fertility challenges and autoimmune disease. The results were transformative. My experience inspired me to learn everything I could about holistic, evidence-based care and how it could safely complement traditional pediatrics.

My work at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering, alongside Child Life Therapists, also showed me the value of mind-body care in children’s healing. These experiences ultimately inspired me to complete fellowship training in Integrative Medicine, with certification specifically in Pediatric Integrative Medicine.

You’re the founder of SproutWell, a pediatric specialty practice. Tell us more about your therapies and care practices.
At SproutWell, I offer holistic, evidence-based therapies to expand a child’s care. My advanced training in integrative medicine allows me to safely and thoughtfully add to what a child’s general pediatrician provides, creating a truly collaborative approach to wellness. Each plan is personalized and may include nutrition guidance, botanical medicine, supplements, acupressure, and pediatric massage.

What are the top reasons families come to SproutWell?

  • Families are looking for a pediatrician who can offer a balanced approach to their child’s medical care. Often parents are seeing an integrative or functional medicine doctor for their own care and want their child to have that additional perspective too.
  • More therapeutic options and personalized care for conditions like eczema, asthma, chronic constipation, IBS/IBD, autoimmune disorders and ADHD.

How did you decide to launch SproutWell?
As both a pediatrician and a mom, I saw a real gap in how our healthcare system supports children. Families were searching for guidance on nutrition, supplements, and holistic options, but too often that advice wasn’t coming from a trusted medical source. I wanted to change that. SproutWell was created to fill that gap and offer families the safe, evidence-based, integrative care I knew our community needed.

Was there any particular inspiration behind the name?
I wanted something simple and meaningful. My vision has always been to start wellness early to help children grow strong, resilient, and healthy from the start. “SproutWell” felt natural; it reflects the idea that when we nurture health early, children truly sprout well.

What can families who work with you expect?
Families can expect a new perspective on their child’s wellness. I take the time to understand their child’s health and their goals as parents. Through our membership model, I become an ongoing ally and advocate. The membership allows parents the ease of using telehealth, check-in phone calls and text messaging directly with me. My role is to help families connect the dots, create a holistic plan, and feel supported every step of the way.

What’s the best piece of advice you’d give parents interested in learning more about holistic therapies?
Start by finding trusted resources. Children aren’t small adults. They are still developing and can respond differently to herbs, supplements, and therapies. I recommend these resources from CHOP https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/integrative-health/resources

Do you have any advice for other moms considering entrepreneurship?
Build something you wish existed. Choose a mission you could talk about, research and pour your heart into every day.

How do you unwind when you need some “me time”?
An Epsom salt bath and a cup of lemon-ginger-honey tea.
