Meet a Mom: Aidan Welsh of Schoonmaker George - Greenwich Moms

Tonight’s Meet a Mom, Aidan Welsh, a Darien local and Mom of 2, is a Partner at Schoonmaker George, a Greenwich-based matrimonial law firm, where Aidan has been practicing for 18 years!

Aidan shares what is most rewarding and most challenging about working at a family/matrimonial law firm and how she balances her impressive career with being a Mom. And she also answers some tough questions about when it’s time to speak to a lawyer!

Can you please tell us a bit about yourself personally?

I live in Darien with my husband Walter and our two kids, Adelaide (10) and Walter (13). I have a love of travel and adventure and love exploring new places with my family. We recently went on an exciting adventure, starting with a safari in Zimbabwe, a visit to Cape Town, my father’s hometown.  Earlier in the year we skied the Alps in Austria.   We’re a big skiing family.

Where do you live in New Canaan/Darien and what do you love about your neighborhood?

We’re in the Tokeneke School District.  Our neighborhood is so welcoming and friendly.

Lifelong friends have been made with our neighbors and the kids are always playing in the yard together.

What made you decide to move there/ how long have you been there?

We’ve lived here for 12 years and specifically chose Darien because of our love of the water, fantastic schools and the wonderful neighborhood that we found.

Can you please share about your individual professional backgrounds and career highlights?

I’ve been an attorney with Schoonmaker George for 18 years and becoming a partner in 2015 was one of my biggest professional highlights. I recently concluded my term as Chair of the Connecticut Bar Association Family Law Section. It was an honor to hold this role, which allowed me to form connections with the family judges, stay up to date on all the changes in the family law legal system, and strengthen my connection with the community.

What do you find the most challenging and most rewarding part of working for a family/matrimonial law firm?

One of the most challenging aspects is dealing with people at the darkest points in their lives, which can be emotionally difficult. However, it’s incredibly rewarding when you can help them reach a better place. The most fulfilling part is making a difference in someone’s life—whether they are coping with a spouse struggling with mental health issues or are victims of domestic violence. Being able to provide a path and exit plan to help them find peace and harmony where they otherwise couldn’t is truly gratifying.

What makes Schoonmaker George unique to other family/matrimonial law offices?

What sets Schoonmaker George apart is our close-knit relationships within the firm. Two of our partners have been with the firm for over 25 years, building a really collaborative environment. Our strong connections also extend beyond the firm to other lawyers and third-party partners, such as tax experts, drug specialists, and therapists, enabling us to deliver the best outcomes for our clients. We pride ourselves on being personable and human while offering deep expertise in navigating legal challenges. We truly put the “family” in family law, which is why I’ve been with the firm for over 18 years!

Sensitive question, but I know many of us would like to know, at what point of considering divorce should you be contacting a lawyer?

I recommend contacting a lawyer as soon as you think a divorce might be a possibility. Getting advice early can be incredibly helpful. Even if you never need to use it, you’ll be well-prepared if the divorce proceeds. It’s always good to know your rights and understand what options are available to you.

How does being a Mom help you in your job and understanding your cases?

Being a parent is both the most rewarding and challenging job, and this personal experience enhances my empathy and understanding towards clients dealing with co-parenting challenges. It allows me to offer authentic support and genuinely relate to their situations.

How do you find a balance with motherhood and your job? Any tips for the rest of the Moms out there?

Never underestimate the power of vacation and travel—they offer an important reset that can improve your overall well-being.

What is your working mom mantra?

You can achieve great success in your career and be a wonderful mother at the same time. It’s entirely possible to have it all. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Having served on the board of YWCA Darien/Norwalk for seven years, giving back to the community where I live and work is deeply important to me. This dedication extends to how I assist and advocate for my clients as well.
