Greenwich Library – From Door to Destination: A Discussion of Community Transportation Options
The provision of safe, reliable and accessible transportation remains a top concern for older adults, caregivers, and the communities in which they live. Accessible transportation services are essential to supporting independence and quality of life as people age. Nearly 90% of older adults, according to AARP, choose to age in place, in their own homes and communities. Successful community living depends on the ability to access medical care, essential services and meaningful social connections.
While the health consequences of limited transportation, missed appointments, delayed care, and increased emergency visits, are well documented, the effects of social isolation caused by lack of mobility can be just as damaging to both physical and mental health. In a highly mobile culture that values independence and choice, the experience of “giving up the keys” is often a significant and emotional life transition. That impact can be greatly reduced when accessible, dependable alternatives to driving are available and well understood.
Join us to learn from representatives of trusted local agencies about transportation options available in our community, including Call-A-Ride, the Greenwich Commission on Aging’s Share-the-Fare Program, Jewish Family Services of Greenwich’s Compassionate Companions Program, Norwalk Transit District, and TAG (Transportation Association of Greenwich). Attendees will also gain valuable insights shared directly by the Chair of the Town of Greenwich ADA Advisory Board, offering perspective on accessibility, inclusion and community-wide transportation.
