Bastille Day on July 14

The French were a critical ally of ours as America fought for its independence and history has shown the impact the successful American Revolution had on France as its people fought for their independence.

Bastille Day celebrates the people of Paris storming and capturing the Bastille prison, which had stood as a symbol of the arbitrariness and oppression of the monarchy, It has always had a special place in Greenwich and on July 14, it will be celebrated again thanks to our friends at the Alliance Française of Greenwich.

The Alliance will raise the French flag at 9 a.m. on July 14, which marks the storming of the Bastille on that date in 1789. A proclamation will be read in English by myself and  Selectwoman Lauren Rabin and then in French by Selectwoman Rachel Khanna as we celebrate French freedom and culture and salute all the French have done for this country and our community.

The flag raising will be followed by a light breakfast outside by the flagpole. All are invited to come and be a part of this celebration.
