Big News out of Whitby School | Greenwich Moms

Today, Whitby School’s Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Dr. John “Jack” Creeden as the school’s Interim Head of School. The appointment, effective July 15, 2019 – June 30, 2021, follows the successful completion of a comprehensive search in which Creeden distinguished himself from an extensive pool of highly qualified and impressive candidates. Creeden comes to Whitby with more than three decades of experience in independent school leadership, teaching, governance and strategic planning. Creeden was most recently Head of School at Chadwick School, a highly-regarded independent K-12 school in California. Previously, he was president of School Year Abroad (“SYA”), where he was responsible for the leadership and administration of the program’s one-year language immersion program at four schools in China, France, Italy and Spain. Before SYA, Creeden served as headmaster of Providence Day School (“PDS”) in Charlotte, N.C., and as headmaster of Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Creeden has been a leader in the independent school community, mentoring aspiring heads, conducting governance workshops and serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) from 2012-15. Creeden holds a BA from College of the Holy Cross, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“Jack’s passionate commitment to character development, global citizenship and experiential learning make him an excellent leader for Whitby School. His warmth, intelligence and extensive record of accomplishment made an impression on the parents, teachers, board members and members of the school leadership team who participated in this inclusive process. Jack is naturally collaborative – a leadership attribute we all agreed was essential in our next Head of School. We are confident that Jack’s experienced and steady stewardship will help Whitby continue to thrive for many years to come. We look forward to welcoming Jack and his wife Carole to the Whitby family this summer,” said Deepa Javeri, Chair of the Board of Trustees. Creeden noted, “I feel extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to join the Whitby community and work together with faculty, staff, parents and trustees. Whitby stands alone in this area for teaching a Montessori and IB curriculum that is recognized across the world for excellence, global citizenship, and developing a passion for learning among students. Beginnings are important, and Whitby’s singular focus is to create a solid foundation for students that will preparing them for success in secondary school, the university and later life.”
