If you’re always looking to improve on your family’s eating, we have a new service we just tried that we think you’ll love. Walden Local Meat Co. is a monthly meat share, which brings 100 percent grass-fed and finished beef, pasture-raised pork, chicken and lamb, along with pasture-raised eggs, specialty sausages and grass-fed butter, to your doorstep. All the animals are raised on about 75 local farms in New England and New York. “We sustainably share whole animals across our member base, so you are always getting something new to try and experiment with, and we provide recipes to help folks do this. For the less adventurous we also offer a ‘custom’ share that allows you to choose particular cuts but still allows us to balance the whole animal,” explains company founder Charley Cummings. Every cut is labeled with the farmer who raised it and location, and sent in reusable packaging that they change out each time a new share is delivered. You won’t find any antibiotics, hormones or toxic pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers in any of their products. Shares start as low as $39, including delivery.
While that’s possibly more than you might be spending now, it’s a more humane and eco-friendly way to eat meat. “It’s easier to raise a chicken in a cage they can’t turn around in, it’s easier to put your products in a cardboard box and ship them via UPS and it’s easier to just buy pieces from distributors instead of whole animals directly from farms. But we think animals should be raised outside on pasture, and we wanted to develop a direct relationship with our members,” says Cummings. She adds: “What we do from a health and environment perspective is what gets people interested in what we do, and it’s the taste that makes them stick around.”
