Riverside Garden Club celebrates America “Open Garden Day” at Putnam Cottage

June 7 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Riverside Garden Club has a special celebration planned for America’s 250th birthday and you can come to one of Greenwich’s most historic sites to be a part of it.

On June 7, it will hold an Open Garden Day at Putnam Cottage, which is also known as Knapp’s Tavern. This site is at the centerpiece of Greenwich’s colonial history and was even where then Gen. George Washington and his staff stopped while traveling through Greenwich.

The Open Garden Day will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 7 and all are welcome to attend.

The Riverside Garden Club has been involved with this historic site before. In 2024, it restored the herb garden there after hops plants were discovered that were possibly similar to what was once used to make the ale served at Knapp’s Tavern.

To help with the celebration, Two Roads Brewery of Stratford has volunteered to brew ale using the hops grown in the colonial garden. And as a special treat, the public will be able to enjoy samples of the ale.

In case of inclement weather, a rain date of June 14 has been planned. There will be parking at Putnam Cottage and across the street at Christ Church. More information about the Riverside Garden Club is online and you can also send an email to [email protected].

And remember, there is a frequently updated calendar online of patriotic events in Town marking America’s 250th birthday. Keep checking the calendar to make sure you don’t miss an event.
