As part of our “Discover Greenwich” Program, we welcome you to explore the Putnam Hill Historic District with a guided walking tour along East Putnam Avenue. The tour will take approximately forty-five leisurely minutes starting in the Christ Church parking lot, and will feature a number of structures, parks, and monuments. Putnam Hill itself was named after Connecticut’s Revolutionary war hero, General Israel Putnam, whose famous escape from the British in 1779 down Putnam Hill to Stamford is memorialized with a monument at the brow of Putnam Hill. The tour will cover a span of development across 275 years, from c. 1700-1975.
