Performances on Thursday, June 9th and Friday, June 10th

Riverside, CT — The International School at Dundee (ISD) is pleased to announce its production of The Jungle Book KIDS, presented by the ISD Parent Teacher Association (PTA) as part of an in-school residency program with Open Arts Alliance to promote arts education in the curriculum. This is the school’s first production since the beginning of the pandemic.

The high-energy 40-minute musical, designed for elementary school-aged performers, is based on the classic Rudyard Kipling novel and the beloved 1967 Disney film. The 5th grade cast includes 28 students and the musical is directed by Cindy Busani, teaching artist for Open Arts Alliance, music directed by ISD music teacher and choir director, Dr. Sandra Heikel, and produced by the ISD PTA and a team of 5th grade parent volunteers. The musical is the culmination of months of rehearsals for the talented cast and they are thrilled to dedicate their production to ISD’s beloved principal, Mrs. Terry Ricci, who is retiring this year.

“After the various challenges our students faced in the past two years, presenting a story of friendship, overcoming odds, and togetherness was very much the goal of this partnership and at the heart of the show choice” said Rocco Natale, executive director of Open Arts Alliance. ”The jungle book is a story about growing up and all of the people who teach us along the way. The film holds such a warm place in the heart of so many generations that have come before us, that we cannot help but be excited to share the music and laughs with a whole new generation of students.”

Both the process of creating the musical and the story of Jungle Book bring to life key aspects of ISD’s International Baccalaureate program—the goal of which is to develop world citizens who recognize universal human values. Specifically, the students explored being risk-takers and took an inquiry-based approach to growing as performers. Director, Cindy Busani constantly challenged each student to think about their characters and then move and speak like theirs would. “You’ll feel as if you are watching actual monkeys, elephants and other jungle creatures!”.  As one student recently said, “at the beginning I didn’t know what I was doing, but now I really understand my character”.

Open Arts Alliance’s Natale added, “Because theater is a collaborative art form the students are not only learning music, dance and public speaking, they are coming to know one another in a new light and working toward a goal that is larger than any of their individual abilities.”

The jungle is jumpin’ with jazz in this exciting adaptation of the classic Disney animated feature The Jungle Book. Join Mowgli, Baloo, King Louie and the gang as they swing their way through madcap adventures and thwart the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan. Adapted especially for young performers, this musical includes favorite Disney songs including “The Bare Necessities” and “I Wan’na Be Like You.” With colorful characters and that toe-tapping jungle rhythm, The Jungle Book KIDS is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for all ages!

“Most of these kids will probably never be in another theatre production, but the memories they have made working together with their friends to put on an amazing show for their school will live on in their hearts” said Ana Laborde, chair of the ISD PTA musical committee. “I could not be more thrilled to be part of the 5th Grade Musical at ISD. I can’t wait to see what we do next.”

Performances for The Jungle Book KIDS are 40 minutes in length and will be held in the Gym at ISD on Thursday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m. and Friday, June 10th at 6:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $5 and on sale now for the public at ISDPTA.ORG
